A challenge coin is a physical token, representing certain principles and given out for purposes such as, affiliation, recognition, or encouragement. The name “challenge coin” and their original purpose is rooted in history and has its own story, however, the modern-day challenge coin takes many different forms. Each coin design is unique and given away following a tradition or intention. A challenge coin may be given out for organizational membership, an honorary award, or for encouragement of a cause.
Challenge coins are given away by individuals, companies, and organizations. They are handed out by leaders, colleagues, or among friends. The coin is a keepsake, a reminder that represents something special. For some it represents achievement, the realization of a lifelong dream. For others, it is not only a reminder but a challenge, encouraged by tradition, and carried on by those who honor it. The value of each coin is defined by the journey it takes and the significance the coin holds to both, the person who gives it, and the person who holds it.
Challenge coin design.
Each challenge coin is designed with symbols, words, or phrases specific to its cause. The coin is often larger than a common coin and may include colors and unique markings. A challenge coin design can be relatively simple or be extremely elaborate complete with custom shapes. However, the coin's design and origin are only part of its meaning. The true purpose of the coin is fulfilled once it is given away.
How a challenge coin is passed along.
A challenge coin is given in a meaningful exchange between the presenter and recipient. A coin may be given away ceremoniously or informally. It is also common for a challenge coin to be exchanged within a handshake. Regardless of how the coin is passed, a bond is created, personal value is added to the coin, and the coin takes the next step in its journey.
Many coins change hands once or twice and end up in a display, on a desktop or placed in a keepsake box. Other coins go much further, pass through many hands, and gain more value with each exchange.
The question is: Just how far can one challenge coin go?
This coin is designed in the spirit of both Smile2Infinity and Spread Goodness Day. It is intended to be held onto as a reminder of goodness in the world and given away to acknowledge or encourage further acts of goodness. A portion of the proceeds from each coin purchase will be donated directly to Spread Goodness Day to support their ongoing mission and annual event.
Smile2Infinity Design
On one side of the coin is the design associated with Smile2Infinity. The arrows feeding into each other represent the passing of good deeds and how one smile or positive action leads to another. They symbolize cooperation and relationship and the cyclic nature of our lives and exchanges we make. The infinity symbol is a reminder that this exchange goes on and on and how a good act or positive experience can echo in a single person forever. The reversible smiley face represents the idea that we can help ourselves and those around us see goodness, even when everything is turned upside down.
The inscription on this side of the coin reads “GIVE FOR GOODNESS”. This statement has three meanings. First, when we give for the right reason, we help another person. We all need help and receiving help can remind us of everything that is good in this world. Second, that when we are able, we should give. The act of giving in service to others increases the happiness in our own life. Lastly, it is a reminder that the coin itself is designed to be held as a reminder of the giving spirit, but when the time is right, it should be given away.
Spread Goodness Day Design
On this side of the coin is the design associated with Spreads Goodness Day. It consists of a sun burst, spiraling in the center with sunrays extending in every direction. Among the sunrays is a single, growing tendril which branches out and begins to circle around the sun. This tendril has sets of leaves and one flower blossoming from its vine. The symbolism in this design includes the feelings of warmth from helping others that can be felt deep inside, the spreading of our warmth and light in all directions with and the traveling effect that one act of goodness can have in the lives of others.
The inscription on this side of the coin reads “HOLD ON FOR GOODNESS”. This statement has three meanings. First, when we are struggling personally, we must hold on to the positive principles that keep us moving. The light illuminates the good inside ourselves and helps us navigate through the dark times. Second, we hold on to the knowledge that there is good in other people and in the world. This will increase our compassion when asking for help or seeing others in need. Lastly, it is a reminder that the coin is designed to be held on to as a reminder to hold on to what you have, until it is time to give it away in service to another.
